- What does the tamper-evident audit chain actually do?
- It is optional: turn it on in the vote settings before voting opens. When it is on, every cast vote's hash chains to the previous vote's hash plus the poll's public chain seed — modify any vote and the chain breaks visibly. Each voter receives a unique receipt token (prefix bvr_) they can use at /verify/{pollId} to confirm their vote is in the chain. Anyone can check the published per-option totals on the public verification page. Those public totals are per-option sums; for ranked-choice polls they are not the instant-runoff result.
- Which voting method should I pick for my election?
- Ballotis has six voting methods: single choice, multiple choice, ranked choice (instant runoff), star rating, approval, and yes/no. For most HOA / AGM single-position votes (board chair, bylaw amendment), use single choice or yes/no. For competitive multi-candidate, single-winner elections where a vote-splitting concern exists, use ranked choice (instant-runoff voting / IRV) — voters rank candidates and Ballotis runs the IRV algorithm until one candidate has a majority. Ranked choice is single-winner today.
- Is my voter privacy protected?
- Voter identities are not shown on the public chain — only the receipt token. Email magic-link verification proves a voter controls the inbox they voted from. No SOC 2 report yet.
- Can Ballotis be used for legally-binding elections (HOA bylaws, union, regulated)?
- Verify with your counsel before deploying for anything legally binding. Ballotis provides an optional tamper-evident audit chain and per-voter receipts, but it does not make an election legally valid on its own — that depends on your governing documents and state law. We don't currently certify against specific election-software certification regimes (EAC VVSG, CAC); if you need those, you need a different vendor.
- How do I prevent bots / coordinated voting / vote stuffing?
- Several checks, each toggleable per poll. Email magic-link verification — the voter must click a link in a real inbox. Cloudflare Turnstile CAPTCHA. User-agent screening. Blocking of major cloud-provider IP ranges. A built-in list of common throwaway email domains. Per-IP and per-email rate limits with cooldown windows. Geofencing per poll (allow or block by country). A honeypot field and a minimum time on the page. These are rule-based checks and will not stop every coordinated attempt; for high-stakes votes, enable the audit chain and the public verification page so your community can check the totals.
- What's the difference between Ballotis and Aclamos?
- Same company, same codebase, different scopes. Aclamos is the full awards-show platform — submissions, judging, ceremony, certificates, finance — with voting as one feature among many. Ballotis is the standalone voting product for organizations that ONLY need votes (HOAs, AGMs, student gov, fan votes). Both share the same voting methods and the same optional audit chain; pick Ballotis when you don't need submissions or jury workflows. Ballotis sells per election (most votes happen once or twice a year) as well as by subscription; Aclamos primarily sells per-year subscriptions.

- Does Ballotis integrate with our existing systems?
- There is a read-only REST API at /api/v1 (list polls, fetch results), authenticated with a bearer token. We don't ship native Salesforce / iMIS / Higher Logic / SCIM connectors. Custom domains (vote.yourorg.com) are not available. Ballots are served from a Ballotis address, which you can link from your own site.
